Summer Reading no. 18: Distress Signal by Mary E. Lambert. Great choice for fans of the I Survived series with a dash of friendship drama.
Summer Reading no. 17: Shirley & Jamila Save their Summer by Gillian Goerz. This was a really fun graphic novel about a 10 year old Sherlockesque detective and her unlikely new best friend.
Summer Reading no. 16: Cranky Chicken by Katherine Battersby. Instead of a scene from the book, I illustrated the crossover that will likely never happen, but would be so fun: Cranky Chicken meets Grumpy Monkey (by Suzanne Lang and Max Lang.)
Summer Reading no.15: The Million Dollar Race by Matthew Ross Smith. I was expecting a straight forward sports story, but was pleasantly surprised by Grant’s quirky family and the conflict to do what’s right versus what’s easy. Fun read!
Summer Reading no. 14: Ms. Marvel vol. 1 by G. Willow Wilson and Adrian Alphona. I was inspired to pick it up by the delightful Disney+ series and it did not disappoint. (It’s probably my favorite of the Marvel TV shows so far.)
Summer Reading no. 13: Stella by McCall Hoyle. I always worry about dogs on the covers of children’s books. Thankfully, Stella survives the story!
Julieta and the Diamond Enigma by Luciana Duarte Armen Dárez. I loved this one and couldn’t put it down! (Hopefully kids who aren’t super into art museums and haven’t been to Paris will still love it too!). The main character goes to Paris with her dad who works for a Boston museum that is loaning some materials from the Louvre. A diamond goes missing. Mystery and adventure ensue! The main character has a charm bracelet and collects a charm for each landmark she visits. My only (minor) complaint is that she skipped my personal favorite art museum in the world, the Musee D’Orsay. But then, maybe she’ll get to visit in a sequel.
Summer Reading no.11: Measuring Up by Lily Lamotte and Ann Xu. A great book if you like cooking, spending time with a loving grandparent and about how maybe we’re all more alike than different.
Summer Reading no. 10: Mystery on Magnolia Circle by Kate Klise and illustrated by Celia Krampien. A younger reader version of Rear Window, minus the murder. (There’s a burglary and a missing dog.)
